When you get extreme weather like we have had towards the end of November and the beginning of December 06 it presents us with both challenges and opportunities in equal measure.
A 4ft (1.2m) swell here on the Glamorgan heritage coast translates to waves of 8 ft (2.5 m) peak to trough and a massive 12ft to 15ft (4m to 5m) near cliffs as the reflected waves from the cliffs add to the oncoming ones.
The upper left image was taken first in softer overcast conditions, and the lower one was taken as the sun peeped through the clouds, transforming the whole scene.
The cropped image on the upper right shows a wave in the process of being forced tens of feet into the air.
I have to admit to a healthy self preservation streak in these situations. I will spend ages watching before setting up my kit to make doubly sure that I am not going to be surprised by a bigger wave than usual.
